Words of Appreciation
“Kshiraj gets my highest possible recommendation. Highly recommended for any mascot design, animation or drawings of any nature. The quality of work is fantastic and worth much, much more than he charges. Best and friendliest provider on Elance!”
— Tariq Khattab, Owner, Australian Computer Doctors
“Kshiraj is a very talented designer, and a nice chap to boot. His communication style is excellent and precise. The designs he did for me were quite challenging and required a lot of work. Kshiraj was more than up to that challenge. I will work with him again.”

about
a little bit about me

I'm fortunate that I was born on the right planet at the right time.
I take my inspiration from legendary artists like Ben Caldwell, Carlos Meglia, Humberto Ramos, Sanjay Patel, Tim Burton and many more. If they didn't exist, my last drawing would have been the old school days' doodle of an isosceles triangle shaped like mountains, and two zigzag lines representing a river with a silly boat on it.

I love picking brains! Ummm... not exactly like zombies though!
I consider myself lucky to have worked with some wonderful people during the past years. I took immense pleasure and delight in picking their brains (and skills). All of these people not only helped me through their constructive criticism, but also influenced and helped my work become what it is today.
FROM WHERE IT ALL STARTED
I was born and raised in a very small town (situated 450 miles from New Delhi), which even today, may not have more than a hundred computers. However, thanks to my family’s understanding of art, as well as their continued support and motivation, I was able to ‘observe – imitate – innovate’ cartoon designs at a young age.
Animation shows on television appeared as rocket science to me, as if the broadcast was from outer space. Therefore, while I was in school, newspaper cartooning became my aspiration. My work wasn’t too bad (at least in the eyes of the editors), and hence I got the opportunity to make regular political cartoons for some local newspapers, like Dainik Bhaskar and Dandkaranya (really popular in Central India). The concepts weren’t mine, as I was too young to understand Indian politics, so my dad helped me with the ideas, and I illustrated them on paper.
CAREER STORY
My professional career can be divided into four phases: ‘the passionate wannabe;’ ‘the know it all mentor;’ ‘the civilized animal in a corporate world;’ and ‘the live free independent artist.’ The following four paragraphs describe each phase:
A level-headed encyclopedia of art, games, and movies is the phrase I use to describe him the best. I consider myself lucky to have worked with him. A real energetic, passionate guy, who really knows how to keep his surroundings at the same energy level.
Because I couldn’t afford slash deserve slash bribe slash wait for entry into an art school (for which I came to New Delhi), I had to drop the idea of formal education and learn animation art on my own. I was fortunate enough to be hired by some start-up studios that let me learn, (can’t say – earn) and see all the stages of internet animation production. During that time, I was staying awake days and nights – trying to understand animation, literally spending every single penny I earned on reference books and VCD/DVDs and knowing Kaya as the only girl I stared at for more than five seconds.
Just as I was graduating to a worthy production artist, a couple of animation schools stole me and hired me as one of their faculty. The gatekeeper tried to restrict me from entering the school without showing a student ID, even though I tried hard to convince him that I’d been recruited to teach there. I managed to waste two valuable years of my career training kids (some of them even older than me). Maybe I was there with a hope that a damsel student would get crazy about me, make a proposal, and marry me someday. Luckily, that did happen!
Later, some corporate dudes (the kind who come to work wearing a suit) surprisingly saw some potential in me, and thought that I could add value to their company in their mainstream website development work. Wasn’t their fault, but I was kind of a misfit and couldn’t live up to their expectations. Nor could they bring me the kind of work I wanted to do, so I was laid off after they saw that I had bought a handful of comic books and DVD movies from their given wages.
Finally, it appeared that it was a good idea to go independent and do work only of my liking. Hence, I became a freelancer, and at the same time, met some really nice buyers for my work. My small studio is called Animation Saints, where I am united with an extremely talented team of like-minded artists. I now work from my beloved home studio, loaded with comics, gear, and gadgets of my liking, keeping my customers satisfied, and still managing to find time for comics, movies, and video games!
Kshiraj and I have worked together for long. He is one of the most passionate and dedicated artist I have known. He’s also a darn good teacher, I have learned a lot from him. The right mix of art and communication skills is what makes him so cool. Last but not the least, he is one hell of a nice guy! I wish him all the best!
Skill Details
Stage 01 – Client Brief
I take an initial understanding of client’s requirement, which can either be well researched internet findings or simply a text note.
Stage 02 – Concept Sketches
I offer one, two or more character design concepts done with pencil and let the customer pick the desired illustration style.
Stage 03 – Sketch Modifications
Then I make adjustments to the selected model which works for the client. It gets touched up until it’s good to go to digital process.
Stage 04 – Digital Inking
Once the sketch is approved, I take it to my vector application (Illustrator, Toon Boom Studio, etc.) and trace all of it’s outlines.
Stage 05 – Coloring
After the line art version is approved, I start to add color, again in vector so that the artwork fits all kind of delivery requirements.
Stage 06 – Final Delivery
Finally some more color adjustments and minute corrections are done (shadow details, etc.) and the design is ready for delivery!

Three weeks back, I made a new friend who was about to get married and was too crazy about my wedding invitation design. He wanted to have something similar done for himself, as D day was approaching. Both the bride and groom are from Rajasthan (a state from India) where puppet shows in traditional dress [...]
